Why Tree Planting Matters

  • 01

    Cleaner air

Trees improve air quality and capture carbon, reducing greenhouse gases.

  • 02

    Healthier soil and water

Roots conserve soil and trees improve water quality.

  • 03

    Wildlife habitat

Trees provide habitat and support biodiversity.

  • 04

    Beautiful landscapes

Trees make neighborhoods greener and more beautiful.

When to Plant a Tree in Sacramento

Fall is the best time to plant in the Sacramento Valley. From October into early December the soil is still warm enough for roots to grow, the air has cooled, and winter rain does much of the watering. A tree planted then spends its first months building roots instead of fighting the heat, so it meets its first summer far better prepared.

Late winter and early spring work too, as long as you're ready to water steadily once the weather warms. Summer is the hardest time to plant: a tree that goes in during July has to grow roots through a run of triple-digit days, and it needs close attention just to survive.

Choosing the Right Tree for the Spot

Start with the size the tree will reach, not the size it is in the nursery can. A valley oak grows into one of the largest trees in the valley, while a crape myrtle stays small enough for a parking strip. Look up for power lines, check how close the trunk will sit to the house, the driveway and the sidewalk, and think about which windows you want shaded. Trees on the west and south sides of a house block the hottest afternoon sun.

Then match the tree to the conditions. Many Sacramento yards have heavy clay or a hardpan layer that drains slowly, and summers are long and dry, so trees that tolerate clay and drought tend to do best. Our tree guides cover eleven species that grow well here, including valley oak, Chinese pistache, zelkova and crape myrtle, with where each one fits and how to care for it. See all eleven guides.

Planting It Right

Most new trees that struggle were planted too deep. Dig the hole two to three times as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself, so the root flare, where the trunk widens at its base, sits at or slightly above the surrounding soil. Loosen or cut any roots circling a container tree, backfill with the soil you dug out, and water slowly to settle out air pockets.

Spread three to four inches of wood chip mulch over the planting area and keep it a few inches clear of the trunk. Stake a tree only if it can't stand on its own, tie it loosely so the trunk can flex in the wind, and remove the stakes after the first year.

Watering a New Tree

A new tree depends on you for water through its first two to three summers. Water deeply and slowly so the root ball and the soil just beyond it are soaked, then let the top few inches dry before watering again. In a Sacramento summer that usually means once or twice a week, and more often in a heat wave. Quick daily sprinkling from a lawn system doesn't reach the roots and keeps them shallow.

As the tree grows, move the water out toward the edge of the canopy, where the new roots are, and taper off as it settles in. A young tree that wilts, drops leaves in midsummer or shows scorched leaf edges is telling you it needs a deeper soak.

Tree Planting: Frequently Asked Questions

Do you really plant a tree for every tree you remove?

Yes. For every tree we cut down, we pledge to plant a new one in its place at no additional cost to our clients.

When is the best time to plant a tree in Sacramento?

Fall, from about October into early December. The soil is still warm enough for root growth, the heat has passed and winter rain helps with watering. Late winter and early spring also work if you can water through the first summer.

How far from my house should I plant a tree?

It depends on how big the tree will get. A common rule of thumb is to keep large shade trees about 20 feet from the foundation and smaller trees at least 10 feet away, and to avoid planting anything that will grow tall under power lines.

How often should I water a newly planted tree?

Deeply, then let the top few inches of soil dry before the next watering. In summer that is usually once or twice a week for the first two to three years, more during heat waves. Short daily sprinkling is less effective than a slow, deep soak.

Does a new tree need to be staked?

Only if it can't stand upright on its own. Tie it loosely so the trunk can move in the wind, which helps it grow stronger, and remove the stakes after about a year.
