Tree Services in North Highlands, California

North Highlands took shape around McClellan Air Force Base, and by the 1960 census it was already a community of more than 21,000 people. Today it is almost entirely built out, a grid of small homes along Watt Avenue, Elkhorn Boulevard and Walerga Road, with the former base now running as McClellan Park. The canopy reflects that history. Much of it is made up of shade trees that homeowners and builders planted when the tracts were new, so many front yards hold a single large tree that has been growing for decades. Native valley oaks survive in pockets, mostly near the creek channels. Magpie Creek was rerouted and channeled through the McClellan and North Highlands area, Don Julio Creek also runs through the community, and Arcade Creek passes near its southern edge.

Lots in neighborhoods like Planehaven, North Haven and Larchmont Village are modest, and the houses are small next to the trees that have grown up around them. Big ash, elm and mulberry trees now spread across the whole roofline, drop limbs on carports and fences, and reach into the overhead service lines that feed many older homes. Roots that had decades to spread can lift driveways and find their way into aging sewer laterals. Some of these trees were topped in past years, and the regrowth that follows topping is often weakly attached and prone to breaking. Others are simply reaching the end of a normal lifespan, with decay at old pruning wounds or in the trunk.

Tree work here usually starts with judging whether an old tree is still sound. A crown reduction, deadwooding and clearance pruning can keep a healthy mature tree in place for years, while one with serious decay or a split trunk is often safer to remove before winter storms test it. Tight lots mean careful rigging over roofs and neighboring yards, and any work near energized lines needs to be coordinated with the utility. A remaining native oak on a North Highlands lot deserves extra care, because county rules cover removal, pruning and digging inside its dripline.
