Tree Care for Antelope's Creekside Oaks and Tract Yards

Antelope was little more than a rail stop, a post office and a few houses until planned subdivisions started going in during the late 1980s. The ground is mostly flat, and Dry Creek marks much of the western edge, separating the community from Gibson Ranch. That creek corridor holds the oldest trees around: big valley oaks, interior live oaks, Oregon ash and box elder, with cottonwoods and sycamores near the water. Away from the creek, most of the canopy went in with the houses, so street trees, park trees at places like Tetotom, Pokelma and Lone Oak Park, and backyard shade trees are roughly the same age as the neighborhoods around them. In East Antelope, the county's specific plan singled out oak trees as one of the area's most important natural resources, which is why scattered native oaks still stand between some of the newer streets.

Most Antelope homes are production-built houses on compact lots, from the first tracts of the late 1980s to newer sections like Barrett Ranch. The trees planted when those homes were new have now filled in, and many were set closer to the house than their mature size allows. That shows up as limbs resting on roofs and gutters, canopies crowding a neighbor's yard, and roots pushing at sidewalks, driveways and patio slabs. Backyards here are usually reached only through a narrow side gate, so a bucket truck often can't get to the tree. Lots that back onto Dry Creek or a drainage corridor deal with a different problem: native oaks whose roots run under lawns, irrigation lines and fence posts, and which don't tolerate the summer watering a turf yard gets.

In practice, a lot of tree work in Antelope means climbing and rigging, lowering cut sections on ropes and carrying the wood out through the side yard. Pruning to lift limbs off roofs and thin heavy crowns before winter storms is common, since wet soil and gusty fronts are when overloaded branches fail. Oaks need a lighter touch: keeping trenching, grading and new hardscape out from under the dripline, pruning them in the dormant season, and checking permit requirements before any removal. Stump grinding after a removal also frees up space in yards that don't have much to spare.
