Tree Services in Carmichael, California

Carmichael started as farm colonies that Daniel Carmichael began selling in 1909, carved from old Mexican land grants that early promoters described as rolling ground scattered with oaks. A surprising number of those oaks are still standing. Valley oaks and interior live oaks shade older parcels off Fair Oaks Boulevard, and the canopy gets denser as the land falls toward the American River, which forms the community's southern edge. Ancil Hoffman Park and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center protect the biggest piece of native woodland, where cottonwoods and willows along the water give way to open oak grassland a short walk from neighborhood streets.

The colony land was first sold in 10-acre tracts, and you can still see it in the deep lots where a ranch house sits far back from the road with a broad old oak in the side yard. Del Dayo and Wilhaggin, close to the river, filled in during the 1960s and 1970s on wide lots, so their shade trees have had decades to reach full size and now spread over roofs, pools and neighbors' fences. Homes on the bluffs above the parkway face steep back slopes and wind funneling up the river corridor. Elsewhere, smaller lots squeeze large trees close to foundations, driveways and overhead service lines, and old oaks that sit in watered lawns are prone to root decay.

Because Carmichael is unincorporated, Sacramento County, not a city hall, decides what can happen to a native oak, so permits come up more often here than many owners expect. A long driveway or narrow side gate often decides whether a job uses a bucket truck, a crane or climbers lowering wood by rope, and bluff parcels usually need careful rigging to keep debris off the slope. For mature oaks, modest pruning that removes deadwood and reduces end weight tends to serve the tree better than heavy cuts. Winter storms that soak the ground are when big limbs and shallow-rooted trees near the river are most likely to come down, so checking problem trees in the fall is time well spent.
