Trees in Rio Linda

Rio Linda Trees on Acreage, Pasture and Creek

Rio Linda started as farmland carved from the old Rancho Del Paso grant. A Minneapolis fruit-land company bought the tract and subdivided it in 1912, and by 1920 poultry farming had taken hold. That rural layout never fully went away. The county's community plan still aims to keep Rio Linda's agricultural-residential character, and plenty of parcels have room for horses, a barn and a few big trees. The richest canopy follows Dry Creek, which splits into two branches around Cherry Island. Along the creek, valley oaks dominate, joined by interior live oaks, Fremont cottonwood, Oregon ash, box elder and sycamore, with almond trees that have gone wild along the banks and in nearby fields.

Property here ranges from small houses near downtown Rio Linda and the Depot Park area to larger agricultural-residential parcels farther out. On acreage, the trees that matter most are often far from the house: a lone oak in a pasture, a row of old trees along a fence line, or limbs hanging over a paddock, a barn roof or the driveway. Much of Rio Linda sits on hardpan soil of silted clay and fine sand, which keeps roots shallow. After heavy rain, waterlogged ground and a tall crown can add up to a tree tipping over. Creekside lots take the most water. In January 2017 all three branches of Dry Creek went above flood stage and filled Cherry Island, the kind of event that leaves root zones waterlogged.

Acreage usually means easier access for a bucket truck and chipper, but winter ground can be too soft to drive on without rutting a pasture, so timing matters. Many jobs here are about clearing deadwood over animals and outbuildings, lifting limbs for trucks and trailers, and taking down trees that have started to lean after a wet season. Large oaks deserve a careful look before any cutting, because county rules apply to bigger native oaks and to work within their driplines. The community plan bars new development inside the Dry Creek riparian corridor, so work on lots that border it should stay on the private side of the line.

  • Interior live oak

Grows with the valley oaks along Dry Creek and on rural lots, and its evergreen crown can get dense and heavy without thinning.

  • Fremont cottonwood

A fast, large native along the creek branches near Cherry Island, with brittle wood that sheds limbs, so it needs watching near fences and structures.

  • Oregon ash

A native riparian tree on lower, wetter ground near Dry Creek, usually best left to the creek side of the property line.

  • Almond

Survives from Rio Linda's orchard past and has naturalized along creek banks and in fields, where older trees often split or decline.
